Lighthouses are placed in locations that prove to be difficult or dangerous for mariners to navigate. Kate Moore, keeper of the Black Rock Island Light near Bridgeport Connecticut from 1871-1878 said, “Sometimes there were 200 sailing vessels in here at night, and some nights there were as many as three or four wrecks, so you can see how essential it was that they should see our light.” (The Lure of Lighthouses by Alan Ross)

One of the interesting discoveries I have made in my research into lighthouses and the history of the U.S. Lighthouse Service, concerns the children of the light keepers. Although living at a lighthouse was never an easy task, time and again I come across interviews with those who spent many of their childhood years living in the light keepers quarters who speak of those times with fond memories. In fact, almost without exception they describe those years as the best years of their lives.
